After a Hair Transplant: 9 Things to Expect in the First 6 Months

After a Hair Transplant: 9 Things to Expect in the First 6 Months
Quick answer: After a hair transplant, expect scabbing and redness in the first week, transplanted hairs to shed around weeks 2–4 (“shock loss”), a quiet phase for 2–3 months, new growth from month 3–4, noticeable thickening by months 5–6, and near-final results around 12 months. The shedding phase is normal and temporary — not a failed transplant.

Recovery follows a predictable timeline, and knowing it prevents needless worry — especially around the shedding phase. Here’s what the first six months look like.

  1. Days 1–7: scabbing and redness. Tiny scabs form around each graft and the area looks red. Gentle washing as instructed is essential to protect the grafts.
  2. Week 2: scabs clear. Scabs fall away and the redness starts to settle. The grafts are securing into place.
  3. Weeks 2–4: shock loss. The transplanted hairs shed — this is expected. The follicle stays alive beneath the skin and will regrow.
  4. Months 1–3: the quiet phase. Little visible change as follicles rest before regrowing. This is the hardest part psychologically; the work is happening underneath.
  5. Months 3–4: new growth begins. Fine new hairs start to emerge. They may look thin and patchy at first — this is normal early regrowth.
  6. Months 4–5: thickening starts. Hairs grow longer and begin to thicken; the new hairline takes shape.
  7. Month 6: noticeable density. A significant share of the final result is visible, with continued improvement to come.
  8. Beyond 6 months: maturing result. Density and texture keep refining, with near-final results around the 12-month mark.
  9. Throughout: protect native hair. Ongoing treatment for the underlying cause keeps the hair around the transplant from thinning, so the result stays natural.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal to lose transplanted hair after surgery?

Yes. “Shock loss” around weeks 2–4 is expected and temporary — the follicles remain alive and regrow over the following months.

When will I see the final result?

Most of the result shows by 6 months, with near-final density around 12 months. For a personalised recovery plan, visit misterhair.in/hairtest.
